"I voted in favour of the regulation after having worked on the file over a number of months. Firstly, I believe it will bring more certainty to the EU regulatory environment for veterinary medicines compared to the current situation where legislation is fragmented across different areas. This regulation will also help increase the availability of veterinary medicinal products by removing red tape and allowing for the harmonisation of the summaries of product characteristics. This will benefit originator and generic manufacturers which will hopefully lead to greater availability and more competitive prices. I supported reducing the Commission’s proposal for the protection of technical documentation for the first marketing authorisation by originator drug companies from 18 years to 14 years. In addition to that, I was very happy to note that the regulation clearly aims at combating anti-microbial resistance which is of particular concern to health professionals. I was also very happy that salmon will be contained within the scope of the regulation. Finally, I was happy to support the amendments which called for the continuity of the use of homeopathy in animals. This contributes to the reduction of the use of antibiotics and allows for consumers to continue using these practices."@en1
