"Mr President, I hope to visit Eritrea in the coming weeks and months with an Irish NGO, Vita, which is involved in food security and development. I hope to take to Eritrea the message of the resolution, which hopefully will be passed tomorrow by my colleagues.
We need to ensure human rights are defended in a circumstance where there is such corruption in Eritrea, but we also need to ensure that, where EU citizens’ finances are actually funding Eritrea, that it is for the people of Eritrea, to the benefit of them and nobody else, that the funding is actually used. I believe the strong message to the Minister, to the Commission, to the Presidency and to the Council is that there must be conditionality on the funding that we, as EU citizens, put into Eritrea and other parts of the developing world – conditionality in terms of human rights to make sure that the government there accepts our bona fides.
I agree with everyone in terms of the comprehensive motion which has been put. I also accept that there is a need to make progress on the case of Mr Dawit Isaak in terms of his detention there, and I reiterate the need to ensure that the EU funding that goes into Eritrea must be to the benefit of the people of Eritrea and nobody else."@en1
