"Mr President, despite being a country of only six million people, Eritreans form the second largest ethnic group in the current migrant crisis, with many seeking passage to the United Kingdom. Much of this has to do with the country’s brutal military dictatorship, which suppresses all liberties and enforces unlimited military conscription, rather than economic hardship. So can someone tell me why the EU has seen fit to boost its economic aid to Eritrea’s despotic leaders, who are said to be operating a totalitarian government with no accountability and no rule of law? Surely this is yet another example of the EU blindly throwing British taxpayers’ money at a problem without the slightest understanding of what the root causes and influencing factors are."@en1
