"I was happy to vote in favour of procedural safeguards for children suspected or accused in criminal proceedings. Given that children face 12% of criminal proceedings within the EU every year and that only six Member states have specialised units dealing with children in prosecution, I believe it is imperative that there are common minimum standards throughout the EU which protect the rights of children who have been accused in criminal proceedings, specifically the right to a lawyer and that any questioning of a child be audio-visually recorded. I agree that all officials dealing with children in criminal procedures should be given appropriate training, and for these reasons I have voted in favour on the motion."@en1
