"Mr President, every now and again a sentence, a procedure, a directive comes out in language that most of us would see as reasonable, or indeed would think is acceptable. In these circumstances, today, these procedures about protecting children in criminal proceedings appear reasonable.
The United Kingdom has opted out of the directive related to this because our procedures in relation to children have a higher standard than those being proposed by the EU. But that is not necessarily the point. The point here for people in the United Kingdom, who have to vote in the referendum on June 23, is that they must realise that the EU is introducing procedures on children which differ from ours. Tomorrow they will be introducing legislation that is different to ours and, if we vote to remain, we will always be subject to these rules at some stage.
This is not about the status quo. This is about the future, and the UK will remain in something that is dark and desperate."@en1
