"Mr President, the Posting of Workers Directive allows companies to ship in foreign workers to another country where there are still unemployed people desperate to find jobs. People will remember the Lindsey Oil Refinery strikes in 2009, which were a direct result of this legislation, and it is this relentless drive towards a single state, with no regard for national borders or standards of living, that angers people in the United Kingdom. Workers brought in on a temporary basis do not have rent or mortgages to pay, they are often housed and looked after by the company. My constituents do not have that luxury – working or not, they still have bills that need paying, and that is the fundamental problem of this Directive and the EU’s freedom of movement. It is a race to the bottom in terms of wages and standards of living. Big business gets away with paying the minimum wage and we end up having a wave of economic migration that drives down wages. It is becoming ever clearer that the European Union is out for big business. Its policies have driven down wages and that will be its downfall. On 23 June, every worker who has been undercut, every worker who has lost their job, every worker who has lost out through open-door immigration, they will have their say. The EU is about the few, but it is the many that will set Britain free."@en1
