"The UK delegation is fully committed to the protection and advancement of women’s rights and we endeavour to ensure that equality for all is fully achieved. Significant numbers of women, however, continue to be subjected to gross mistreatment and violence, and consequently remain in a state of immense vulnerability. Women refugees and asylum seekers are particularly susceptible to such conditions, and it has become abundantly clear that these issues need to be addressed.
We firmly support efforts to protect women from sexual exploitation and abuse, including human trafficking and FGM. We also welcome moves to ensure that women are legally recognised as individuals in their own right. There are nevertheless a few paragraphs of this report which raise concern and have consequently resulted in split votes. For example, we cannot support action that interferes with the legal competency of Member States or the attempts to dictate the terms of asylum at the national level. It is not that we do not agree with such points. Rather, we believe that these demands go beyond the scope of the FEMM committee and infringe upon the principle of subsidiarity. For these reasons we abstained on this report."@en1
