"I voted in favour of this report, drafted by fellow Labour MEP, Mary Honeyball.
Women refugees and asylum seekers often face violence, assault, exploitation and sexual harassment at every stage of their journey, including on European soil. Women – and indeed children – who are entitled to claim asylum are being coerced into transactional sex and forced into prostitution to pay for travel documents or a place in a boat or lorry. They need safer alternatives, as this report sets out.
The specific protection and integration needs of women refugees and asylum seekers have too often been overlooked. To meet the needs of everyone entitled to protection, our asylum laws and policies must be fully gender sensitive at every stage.
On International Women’s Day Labour MEPs are sending a very clear message that action must be taken."@en1
