"The current regulations regarding the Harmonised Indices of Consumer Prices (HICP) date back to 1995, and despite almost 20 amendments over the course of the past two decades, a new framework is long overdue.
Measuring inflation accurately is a key component of the macroeconomic imbalances procedure. HICP indices can have a major impact on economic variables such as wages, rents and interest rates – and can form the basis for economic and monetary policy decisions.
Clearly then, the streamlining of the existing framework as set out by the Commission and my S&D colleague Mr Gualtieri is badly needed. Therefore I supported this proposal."@en1
