"Madam President, I voted against the port service package today, as there are few tangible benefits for North-East ports, their workers or the environment. The proposed legislation has missed the opportunity to include strong employment and environmental provisions, and Labour MEPs will continue to work with the UK’s ports industry and trade unions to oppose this unnecessary legislation. However, we should remember that under all current models in which the UK has access to the single market these are exactly the type of regulations that we would have to adhere to, and we would have no voice or vote to challenge them if we left the EU. If we are to have a say in the EU and on its regulations both as a country and as a region, it is absolutely vital that we remain inside the EU, not just for jobs, investment and rights, but also for the future of our ports."@en1
