"I voted in favour of this proposal that sees the merger of the school milk scheme (SMS) with the School Fruit and Vegetables Scheme. This proposal should promote consumption of these products among school children, and help educate children on healthy eating habits. Statistics show that children are eating less and less fresh fruit, drinking less milk and eating more and more processed food. That is considered one of the causes of obesity amongst children. Previously this Parliament voted to reject 30%-sugar-content baby food for the same reason. In order to improve this situation this proposal merges both the school fruit and milk scheme under the same legislative framework, thus trying to make it more ‘user friendly’ for Member States and lower the administrative burden. Furthermore, it also adds an educational dimension to the scheme where children will have to be introduced to agricultural issues, nutrition/health and environmental issues."@en1
