"Madam President, in the 17 years that I have been here – not for much longer, I hope, depending on our referendum, but that is another question – I have never once been lobbied on the issue of school milk by a nutritionist or an educationalist. I have been lobbied a great deal by farmers. In fact, there is an argument that we have far too much dairy in the Western diet. But, leaving that argument aside, surely this is the kind of thing we can leave to schools to work out for themselves – or, if we absolutely need coordination, then to local – not even to national – governments. How on earth have we got to the point where this kind of issue is being determined on behalf of 600 million citizens? Of course, the answer is precisely because we are so prone to lobbies in this Chamber, and precisely because there is a remoteness of distance between government and governed in Brussels which you do not get at national levels, which is what makes it so attractive to vested interests."@en1
