"I supported this report because, in the view I share with my socialist colleagues, it represents a great achievement of policy-making and of EU law in regards to animals. The new Animal Health Law represents a positive contribution of the EU to the welfare and health of animals. This is something about which many of my constituents in the West Midlands have contacted me.
For me, it was important that this new law should introduce robust measures to tackle diseases which are transmissible between animals of the same species and across species, and diseases which endanger and pose serious health risks to humans. The new law also contains a set of provisions that will be useful for dealing with stray animals in a humane manner.
Overall, this new Animal Health Law represents a great example of how the EU can actually deliver on something about which many citizens across Europe are worried."@en1
