"Madam President, today I received an email from Carmel Nic Airt, who is a primary school teacher from West Cork in Ireland. Carmel is volunteering on the island of Leros, assisting refugees. The refugees are being held in detention camps with no provision for food supply or waste management. Voluntary organisations, already totally overstretched, are being asked to help them. Carmel is absolutely shocked that the most basic needs of these refugees – food and water, sanitation – are not being met, and she has written to all Irish MEPs to ask for help. I had hoped that today’s Council meeting would provide some solutions, some framework or some hope, but once again we see no resolution; nothing. I am disappointed and despondent. Estimates suggest that by the end of this month there will be 130 000 refugees in Greece just this year alone. Only coordinated and concerted EU action can begin to address this issue. If our leaders cannot frame a solution, extremely difficult though that may be, not only will the migrants suffer, so also will the EU itself."@en1
