"Mr President, the regulation of veterinary medicines is important to ensure their safety, quality and effectiveness and therefore protect animal health, public health, food safety and the environment. I recently met with the local chief veterinary officer in my own region of Northern Ireland as well as local representatives of the British Veterinary Association to discuss the wide range of issues relating to animal health, including potential problems ahead in terms of antimicrobial resistance as well as concerns about bovine tuberculosis in my own constituency. The European animal health law will consolidate 40 different pieces of outdated and often inconsistent European legislation in this field and gives a comprehensive framework for animal health in the next 20 years. We need an approach to animal health legislation that has strong focus on outcomes, regulatory simplicity and flexibility in the management of disease. This simplification and harmonisation of legislation is a good example of better regulation and an important drive away from red tape and burdensome bureaucracy. I would also like to address the rapporteur and pay tribute to Marit Paulsen as well. Unfortunately, she is no longer with us, but she was an extremely valued member of the Agriculture Committee. Maybe you would send her the message that we still miss her, and hopefully this will be a tribute to what she has been fighting for for so long."@en1
