"Mr President, firstly, let me say thank you to the rapporteur for the work on this very lengthy and important file. I am giving a cautious welcome to this report, stressing the importance of animal health and, ultimately, the protection of consumers across Europe. However, we still need more scientific evidence in relation to the causes of antimicrobial resistance and how to effectively deal with that resistance. We must ensure that farmers have access to the correct tools to prevent and treat disease in animals. It is imperative that neither animal welfare nor production efficiency should be compromised as a result of the revised legislation. In relation to the reporting and enforcement of this revision, all Member States must comply equally. British farmers need a level playing field and should not be expected to compete in a two-tier Europe, where they face gold-plating of legislation and others across Europe much less so."@en1
