"Madam President, I cannot help detecting a bit of mission creep here, because health should be a competence of the Member State and yet this scheme is being pushed for health reasons. Perhaps I am being a bit cynical, but I cannot help feeling that the EU is trying to get its way into every aspect of our lives.
I am also interested to see that the schools that go into the scheme have got to erect ‘gratitude plaques’– in other words, the picture of the blue background and the yellow stars to say how grateful everyone must be to the EU. As the children drive to school they will see gratitude plaques in the fields – the farmers have their environmental schemes – and then they go into school and there are more gratitude plaques, and this is all going to happen during our referendum campaign about British membership of the European Union. Call me cynical.
I hope that the milk in the schools will be British milk and not Irish milk, but we shall wait and see, and of course the British apple grower will not be very pleased if his product is not mentioned and bananas are."@en1
