"Madam President, I cannot support the suggestion in this proposal this afternoon for the following reasons: the Calais jungle is a result of the Le Touquet Agreement, which is an accord between the French Government and the UK Government, and the European Union has no right to interfere with that.
Secondly, the enforced closure of part of the migrant camp, the Jungle, was on the basis of a French decision taken in a French law court. We have no right whatsoever to interfere with French judicial process. The third item – and I would like to ask everyone to take this into consideration – is that one of the many reasons why the migrants reacted as they did was one anarchist supported by a British charity, and I do not think we ought to support anarchists’ and activists’ work.
The last point is that a lot of these migrants do not want their fingerprints to be taken. That was another reason why they reacted with the violence they did. There is absolutely no way this Chamber should take any stance on this position. It is down to a situation between the UK and French Governments."@en1
