"I supported this resolution on the role of local and regional authorities in the European Structural and Investment Funds. With a budget of EUR 454 billion for 2014-20, the European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIFs) are the European Union’s main investment policy tool. EU cohesion policy promotes a bottom-up approach and I was pleased to see that in this resolution the importance of the Community-Led Local Development initiative, in which local authorities are partners, was highlighted. I believe it is crucial that a genuine bottom-up approach where local actors have real decision making powers is used in order to respond directly to local needs and challenges in a more focused and appropriate way. The new ITI and CLLD tools should enable local stakeholders to combine funding streams and plan well-targeted local initiatives. I also support the resolution’s call for the Commission to ensure that support is provided for capacity building for local and regional authorities and their administrations and institutions, so that they are in a position to play a meaningful role in cohesion policy."@en1
