"Mr President, local and regional authorities play a pivotal role in the delivery of public services across Europe. They are closest to local communities and are an asset which must be protected. It is with this in mind that I find myself disheartened by the current treatment of local authorities in Scotland where, under the Scottish Nationalist—led Government, funding of local authorities is being slashed. The Convention of Scottish Local Authorities is currently resisting a budget cut by the Scottish Government of GBP 500 million. Yesterday in the Scottish Parliament we saw that the Government failed to support Labour proposals to address the funding shortfall, and vital frontline services will suffer due to the SNP’s austerity budget. We are already seeing slipping standards before this GBP 500 million cut comes into place, with 6 000 children leaving school in Scotland unable to read properly. Our children are our future, and the SNP is failing too many of Scotland’s children. The importance of the role of local authorities cannot be underplayed."@en1
