"Madam President, I would like to join with everybody here in condemning what happened in Cologne – it was unacceptable. But I also would like to make the point that, yes, it is absolutely true that we have not just discovered violence against women. I would just like to reflect back on what I was doing about 40 years ago as a student in the ‘70s when we had a movement called ‘Reclaim the Night’. It was all about allowing women the space to go out on their own as they wished without harassment. I am talking about the UK. It was absolutely essential that we brought attention to this problem at that time, and at that time there was no so-called ‘Islamisation of Europe’. This was nothing to do with culture; it was British – English – culture and men were simply not letting women behave normally and have normal lives. It is deeply regrettable that we are still in that position now, and I hope that the Cologne lesson can teach us that it is time that we got on with the real roots of this and changed life for women."@en1
