"The UK Delegation is fully committed to the principle of equality between men and women and we recognise that gender equality is a core value of the EU. Accordingly, we have voted in favour of those paragraphs and amendments that reaffirm the fundamental right of all men and women to equal treatment and equality in opportunity.
The UK Delegation was unable to support the text as a whole due to some notable elements which were of concern to us. First, we believe a budget should be allocated to where the need is greatest. A dedicated gender budget runs the risk of diverting funds away from other groups. Secondly, we were unable to support the call for a package of legislative proposals, initiated by the Commission. We are consistent in our firm belief that national governments are responsible for social policy and consequently cannot support the attempted ‘Europeanisation’ of this policy field.
The UK Delegation was unable to support this resolution but felt it was more appropriate to abstain in this instance. We were happy to support alternative texts tabled by the EPP political group and our own group, the ECR."@en1
