"Madam President, we are often told during the British referendum debate that EU membership is necessary for our service sector. Yet here we are in this Chamber discussing a free-trade deal on services that, as well as the European Union, brings together 22 other members of the WTO, from Australia and Israel to Korea and Peru.
The difference is that, while Norway and Switzerland will be represented separately in those talks at the WTO, the United Kingdom, like every other Member State of the EU, will be represented by one 28th of a European Commissioner. For a country that is so dependent on the service sector, that seems to me a disadvantaged position. We could do far better in the world if we were to rediscover our place as a maritime trading nation with a global vocation."@en1
