"Madam President, speaking as a pharmacologist who has been involved in clinical trials, both commercial and academic, I know how important clinical trials are in pharmaceutical development. However, the whole process is fraught with difficulty, and some of the drugs we use today, such as aspirin, would be unlikely to get approval. Regarding the track record of EU clinical trials legislation, in my experience the results to date have not been great. In the UK, the Clinical Trials Directive of 2001 made life very difficult for those of us involved in clinical trials, so much so that in my own field of small-scale phase IV trials, research was virtually curtailed. The Directive has since been replaced by the European Clinical Trial Regulation, which will be fully implemented this year. Will it be an improvement? I doubt it. Regarding transparency, UKIP strongly supports transparency in clinical trials. However, we believe that the UK Parliament and not the EU should be exclusively in charge of regulating this process."@en1
