"I voted in favour of the of the amendments to the 1998 Protocol to the 1979 Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution on Persistent Organic Pollutants because they seek to update the list of persistent organic pollutants covered by the protocol, to make the protocol more adaptable to future developments on the best available techniques and to facilitate accession to the amended protocol by parties with an economy in transition.
In addition to that, the amendments aim to control, reduce or eliminate discharges, emissions and losses of persistent organic pollutants and require parties, of which the EU is one, to eliminate the production and use of the substances which are considered a persistent organic pollutant, to reduce the use of certain pollutants which are considered carcinogenic from the level of the emission in 1990, update the implementation requirements applicable to emissions from certain waste incinerators all of which benefit European citizens and the environment. The amendments to the Protocol are already largely covered by EU legislation, and will be further transposed via a new directive setting updated national emission ceilings for certain atmospheric pollutants. In view of this, I believe the amendments should be supported."@en1
