"Madam President, of course I completely support the richness of biodiversity in my constituency, in the United Kingdom and indeed across Europe. From the wonder of the Washington wetlands, home of some of the world’s rarest water birds, to the grey seal colony on the Farne Islands. From the beauty of the Durham Coast to the simple need to protect our songbirds.
Much of this report I agree with. I want to protect these as much as anyone else here. But then the report goes downhill. Where we need common sense, it proposes bureaucracy. Where we need to safeguard fish, it supports the wasteful common fisheries policy; and where we need localism, it proposes centralisation. You see, this place recognises the problem, but we have the solutions all wrong."@en1
