"Mr President, let me start by thanking the High Representative for her statement in this matter. People in Iraq and Syria are consistently being raped, tortured or killed on a daily basis by the so-called Islamic State. According to the Qur’an, ‘whosoever kills a soul, it shall be as if he had killed all humanity and he who saves a life, it shall be as if he had given life to all humanity’. ISIS destroys places of worship, mosques, churches and other places of cultural heritage, but the Qur’an teaches that the places of worship are supposed to be not only respected, but protected and defended. ISIS eradicates the ethnic and cultural minorities who have coexisted for centuries, as they do not subscribe to their twisted beliefs. While the Qur’an reads that there is no compulsion in faith, the Islam that I and the millions of Muslims in Europe and around the world follow rejects the inhumane methods of ISIS. But rejecting it is not enough. We must act. Whether in Europe or the Middle East, communities are stronger when they work together to combat terrorist propaganda and to administer programmes that celebrate diversity and empower minorities. Everyone has a right to fundamental freedoms and respect of their human rights, regardless of their beliefs or ethnicity. It is our duty to stand in solidarity with the oppressed."@en1
