"Mr President, it was a hell of a result. An extraordinary result emerged from Paris. I get the feeling that afterwards, rather like over-indulging in a night of celebration, many people woke up scratching their heads and trying to work out exactly what it was they had agreed to the night before, because in reality, some of those agreements are quite extraordinary, and rather like checking your phone to find those slightly embarrassing text messages or the slightly unusual tweets you sent when you should not have sent them, we have in fact discovered that inside this bold and extraordinary agreement is genuine boldness, and that represents the 1.5°C ambition which is being mentioned.
Now I listened to my colleagues, one for and one against these things, but whatever it means, we are moving forward at a pace and we must not lose sight of the destination we are going towards. I am conscious, however, that the European Union’s ambitions themselves represent only a 70% chance of hitting our 2050 targets and I think again that ambition must be reconsidered. Listening to Commissioner Arias Cañete, who has much to be thankful for again in what he brought back from Paris, this represents full decarbonisation. All of these things will be serious challenges for this Chamber and we must embrace those challenges and we must live up to the ambitions Minister Fabius set in Paris. Congratulations, Minister. It was an extraordinary achievement."@en1
