"I was very pleased to support the resolution supporting the Colombian Peace Process following the conclusion of negotiations between the Colombian Government and the FARC in 2015. The internal armed conflict has for over 50 years caused untold suffering to its people and given rise to atrocities such as assassinations, enforced disappearances, kidnappings, sexual violence, population displacements and the scourge of anti-personnel mines.
The General Agreement for the termination of the conflict establishes a five-point agenda covering integral agricultural development policy, political participation, a solution to the problem of illicit drugs and victims reparation and justice, finally clearing the way for the end of the conflict by 23 March 2016.
I particularly welcome the resolution’s call for the peace process to be accompanied by a determined effort to combat inequality and poverty, including finding fair solutions for people and communities forced off their lands, and providing Colombia’s people with access to decent work and ensuring recognition of their social and labour rights as well as welcoming the establishment of a Subcommittee on Gender to ensure gender mainstreaming in negotiations and the participation of victims of sexual violence and women’s rights organisations in the peace talks."@en1
