"Six people died and more than 300 were left injured in Essex last year as a result of gas-related incidents. Carbon monoxide poisoning kills. In the last five years, the Gas Safe Register found dangerous appliances in one in six homes in this, just one of the six counties in my East of England constituency. I am not just talking about gas fires and cookers; from the smallest portable camping stoves to industrial boilers for big buildings, the current EU stock of gas appliances is at 470 million and growing, with more than 30 million units being sold annually. Given this magnitude, a high level of safety is absolutely essential. I welcome this report, proposed by my British Labour MEP colleague, which aims to achieve this higher level of safety by setting common requirements and more transparent rules for gas appliance manufacturers in Europe. This is the perfect example of the EU not simply looking to improve the lives of people, but actually to save them."@en1
