"I voted in favour of this report so as to ensure that appliances burning gaseous fuels on the market fulfil the requirements providing for a high level of protection of health and safety for users and for rational use of energy. With the previous directive, there was a lack of clarity with regard to the scope and definitions, which this new regulation aims to improve. This new regulation will also help to improve the functioning of the internal market for gas appliances and help to prevent distortions by some Member States not applying essential health and safety requirements or conformity assessment procedures. Unfortunately it is not within the scope of this regulation to include mandatory standards for carbon monoxide alarms or to require the fitting of a carbon monoxide alarm wherever a gaseous appliance is installed. This is something I had inquired about with the rapporteur and the legal services. Nevertheless, I am happy that there is a recognition of the dangers posed by carbon monoxide in the regulation and that it allows Member States to legislate on periodic inspections or installer training when deemed necessary."@en1
