"I voted in favour of this report as I believe there is a need for more flexible education systems that would allow for matching knowledge and skills at all stages of professional career to face the needs of the labour market and the alarming level of youth unemployment. The report underlines that business creation and self-employment also constitute an opportunity for participation in the labour market. It also calls for an efficient absorption of European funds by the Member States. There are, on the one hand, 24 million unemployed people in Europe, including 7.5 million young people not in employment, education or training (NEETs) and on the other 2 million unfilled vacancies in the EU. Many are over-qualified unemployed youths whose skills do not match the demand of the labour market. Hence the need to build up strong partnerships between local authorities, education and employment services and social partners and the business community to support the creation, implementation and monitoring of short- and medium-term sustainable and quality employment strategies."@en1
