"Mr President, as a Member of this House from Northern Ireland, I recognise fully the transformation that can occur in lives, particularly for young people, as a result of engaging positively with those that are assumed to come from a different background or hold diverse beliefs. In light of the spate of terror attacks and the trend of radicalisation witnessed in Europe in recent months, I am in full support of appropriate measures aimed at stopping the recruitment of young people and combating the wave of division and intolerance that besets us. However, while sending a joint message right across Europe, it is important in this battle that national governments have the primary role to play. This report attempts to influence the nature of national education. It wants to harmonise legislation around cultural heritage and cultural expression. These are matters for sovereign governments to decide, not the European Parliament. Grassroots divisions require grassroots solutions and this is something that the unrelenting federalists in this House today should remind themselves of."@en1
