"Mr President, it is very fortuitous that this report is being debated on the co-rapporteur Evelyne Gebhardt’s birthday, and I should like to start by wishing her a very happy birthday. I think that the Digital Single Market, as we have heard, is full of potential. We have 500 million citizens, 28 countries and an estimated worth of EUR 415 billion. But with regard to accessibility, skills and mind-set, we must make sure that, whether you live in the Highlands of Scotland or you live in the urban centres of Glasgow or Edinburgh, you have accessibility to superfast broadband. That is really important, but so are accessibility and affordability. We have seen that and heard about that, and about equality. On skills: we must make sure that the digital skills gap does not become a digital chasm. We must ensure that our citizens have ICT. Let me give an example, 55 000 job vacancies exist in the UK just now in ICT, and that is set to grow to 171 000 vacancies by 2020. We must ensure that our citizens have the skills and mind-set. We are, as many have said, going through a third industrial revolution. We have to have the mind-set to capture the potential, and I think we can do that today."@en1
