"Mr President, the legitimacy of the European Union to act as honest brokers in the Middle East peace process has again been brought into question. I was struck by a recent Israeli press article about a prominent NGO, B’Tselem, that campaigns, supposedly, on behalf of Palestinians. It reported that B’Tselem had set up a fake land agency, trapping Palestinians wanting to sell their land to Israelis. They were then reported to Palestinian security services, well knowing that they would likely be killed. That this NGO behaves in such a manner is reprehensible. That this NGO receives EU funding is unforgivable. Last month B’Tselem received EUR 30 000 from the European Endowment for Democracy, whose chair of Board of Governors is Elmar Brok, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET), who sits alongside another nine MEPs. I wonder whether EU money is simply being funnelled through the EED to avoid parliamentary scrutiny. Either way, the European Union has blood on its hands."@en1
