"Mr President, I was very happy to support this resolution because it is essential that we maintain what is known as the breeders’ exemption. Essentially, this means that access to all breeding materials is available to all breeders. This means that all modern varieties, as well as landraces and wild species are available. We have to ensure that varieties are kept freely available, without patents, for all who wish to breed. It does not matter if they are subsistence farmers, if they are gardeners, or if they are small businesses in the plant breeding industry. That is why I fully support the call on the Commission to clarify the scope and the interpretation of Directive 98/44/EC. We have to ensure legal clarity in regard to the prohibition of the patentability of products obtained from essentially biological processes. I did support Amendment 5, which asked for a comprehensive breeders’ exemption. That means free commercialisation of new traits. I was disappointed that it was not carried because I think it would certainly have added to what is otherwise a good resolution."@en1
