"I decided to support this report because having respect for, along with the promotion and safeguarding of, human rights must be cornerstones of the EU’s external action. The increased coherence between EU internal and external policies, as well as between the EU’s external policies stands as an indispensable requirement for a successful and effective EU human rights policy. Improved consistency should enable the EU to respond more rapidly in the early stages of human rights violations. Respect for human rights is being challenged and is under threat worldwide and the universality of human rights is being seriously challenged by a number of authoritarian regimes. Finally, more than half the world’s population is still living under non—democratic and repressive regimes and global freedom has continuously declined over the past few years, and this non—respect of human rights has a cost for society and for the individual."@en1
