"Through this Annual Report, we show recognition of all that needs to be done, in the years to come, to fight for human rights and democracy inside and outside the EU
Since the economic crisis, political decisions have been made which clearly undermine citizens’ rights in the EU. And today we are faced with an unprecedented humanitarian crisis within our borders.
And that is why it is vital that, today, we work harder in the EU to defend human rights and to promote them. When austerity measures are put in place, we see the that the fulfilment of civil rights, labour rights, health and education rights is compromised.
I am pleased to hear that the Commission’s main priorities, within external action, will continue to include the protection of human rights, so that this element will continue to shape policies in the near future.
At a time of rising populism, this report rightly reiterates the importance of abolishing the death penalty, promoting freedom of speech, promoting LGBTI, women’s and children’s rights and continuing support for human rights defenders’ groups in other parts of the world where they are undermined by oppressive governments."@en1
