"Mr President, we all support human rights, but this report states that the EU and Member States must speak with a consistent, single voice on such matters. A consistent, single voice interferes with sovereign national rights to set our own foreign policy. I refer in particular to three points in this report and the amendments approved today. Firstly, regarding the talk of a definition of a new type of refugee – a climate refugee – we have not thought through the consequences of doing this, and yet the Parliament approved it by a large majority today. Secondly, quota systems for women in politics and democracy, how on earth – even if you believe that such demeaning quotas are a good thing – can you impose that on countries outside Europe? That is nonsense. Finally, regarding the death penalty, I personally am weakly opposed to the death penalty, but it is not for us to lecture others on that matter. It is a sovereign decision for nation-states to take for themselves."@en1
