"I voted against this report which I have a number of serious concerns with. In my capacity as a member of the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee, I have positively and proactively worked on this report. I have tabled a number of amendments to this report in order to improve the text. What is particularly disconcerting is that the pillar of economic governance has been seriously strengthened over the past years to the detriment of Member States. The EU now has a multitude of instruments at its disposal, ranging from the Fiscal Compact on controlling the draft budgetary plans to the macroeconomic excessive imbalances procedure. And this report is not only seeking to consolidate such powers but also to strengthen and enhance them. At the same time, the social pillar is languishing. This is why it is crucial that Member States retain ownership and that the principle of subsidiarity is not undermined. As a small county, Ireland needs to remain cautious given the inevitable reduction in autonomy and control and I will continue to use my mandate that the Irish people provided me with to ensure that Irish economic and social interests are protected in Europe."@en1
