"Mr President, the Human Rights and Democracy Report before us is one of the most comprehensive that has been produced on the subject globally and is the result of hours of work by experts in the European institutions. I am proud that we in Europe take a stand on behalf of those whose rights are denied around the world. Ask Raif Badawi and Leyla Yunus, two individuals who benefitted because we in Europe decided to act.
However, the struggle for human rights continues. It is a story of long campaigns and uneasy victories against conflict and poverty, against prejudice and ignorance and against crime and justice and repression. Today, at the close of 2015, it is a sobering fact that millions suffer in Syria and more refugees knock on our doors. Plenty of work awaits us in 2016. We must ensure that we ourselves first reflect the very values we seek to promote globally."@en1
