"I am extremely concerned at the current situation in the steel sector, and the base metals sector in general. The supply of raw materials and high energy prices due to European energy policy are having an impact on the European base metals sector’s competitiveness. However, I cannot support the introduction of a carbon border adjustment mechanism; this would encourage protectionism and potentially lead to retaliation from international trading mechanisms. Obliging Member States to provide compensation for indirect costs encroaches upon fiscal sovereignty, and indeed such harmonisation would be too burdensome to implement given the disparities that exist between Member States in terms of energy costs and intensity."@en1
