"Madam President, I strongly oppose this objection which ignores scientific facts and evidence and seeks to prevent not only this authorisation, but all GM food and feed product authorisations, including those that have already passed safety assessments. This is madness. It will only penalise our farmers who rely on GM feed. In this case, EFSA said that GM maize NK 603 was safe. Now, we should be led by the science on this, not by dogma. If a product is deemed safe by EFSA, there is no justification to deny it being placed on the market. What is the point of EFSA if we ignore their advice and base our opinion on personal dogma? The rest of the world is embracing GM. It has huge potential; it can be more environmentally friendly than conventional farming; it offers hope in drought-hit regions, and it is safe. Europe is being left behind with its medieval attitude to this new technology. We should embrace it, not reject it."@en1
