"I fundamentally agree with the premise of supporting better connections across Europe in terms of access to, and the supply of, electricity.
These efforts have the potential to break down barriers to cross-border trade by supporting local businesses to internationalise through swifter, reliable and affordable energy supply. In aiming for a far-reaching expansion and consolidation of the electricity market, however, we must not forget about those in countries where supply is well established, but who still struggle to access electricity affordable for their homes and businesses.
I think in particular of households and businesses in rural Northern Ireland, many of whom simply want the resources and support to set up home or their enterprise in their local, rural community. These are individuals who have faced clear challenges in recent years to connect to the grid.
I know there are coordinated efforts being made by my colleagues in the Northern Ireland Executive to bridge these gaps, however I do feel there is more to be done at Westminster, and indeed within the EU institutions, to send a message that the overarching vision of a continent interconnected is more pertinent than protecting grassroots communities."@en1
