"In my constituency we are, in the words of the East of England Energy Group, “unique” as we include energy producers across a diverse range including nuclear, gas and renewables. My region is key to Britain keeping the lights turned on. Indeed 60 per cent of the offshore wind in the UK comes from just off the East of England coastline. In Norfolk alone, up to 5000 Megawatts in planned capacity could be unlocked within the next 15 years, by three new offshore projects that would come from a meshed grid project in the North Sea. In my work as a local MEP, I have specifically backed a European project to create a North Sea grid for trading renewable energy, as well as the project to host a new gas interconnector.
Therefore I deeply welcome the proposals in today's vote which will support the building of interconnectors between the UK and nine other EU countries and the creation of a North Sea electricity grid which will reduce electricity prices, increase energy security and promote renewable energy. It will also create thousands of permanent, high-skilled, UK jobs, many which will be for my constituency."@en1
