"Conservatives welcome much of the ambition behind the Energy Union given the current fragmented nature of energy policy at the EU level. It must help drive the completion of the internal energy market – without fully liberalised markets our energy supplies will be less secure and more expensive. Conservatives, however, voted against the report as it did not reflect the Council’s agreement on the 2030 climate and energy strategy from October 2014 – which agreed on a requirement for a 40% cut in emissions, without binding national renewable and efficiency targets. We believe that this technology neutral framework will allow the UK reach its emission reduction goals in a way that is cost effective and tailored to our own specific needs. Furthermore we are concerned at calls within the report for Member States to negotiate intergovernmental energy deals jointly and/or mandate the Commission to participate in all Member State negotiations with third countries on such agreements. While we have sympathy with countries that are unduly vulnerable to a single supplier over long-term energy contracts, we do not support a one-size-fits-all approach that provides the European Commission with a role that is neither needed nor requested by all Member States."@en1
