"Madam President, it is quite ironic, is it not, that the World Humanitarian Summit is hosted in Turkey, of all places. The Human Rights Watch website highlights many ways in which Turkey has abused human rights, including restricting internet access, a defective justice system and a consistent clamping down on freedom of expression. What is even more ironic is that the EU has pushed forward Turkey’s accession process, despite human rights abuses. For an institution that prides itself on liberal values, this certainly sends the wrong message. Turkey is already a NATO member, but its posturing towards Russia highlights the danger, to the UK and other European states, of close integration with this hostile and belligerent government. We are naïve if we think trade and membership of this Parliament can change a culture that has been developed over many centuries. We should send a clear signal to the Turkish people that they need to elect a progressive government and implement wholesale reform of their legal structures, which will protect minorities and fundamental rights, before accession is even talked about."@en1
