"Madam President, Europe and the UK watched in horror as Storm Desmond hit parts of the northwest region which I represent. Across Cumbria thousands of homes and businesses have been devastated just weeks before Christmas. Emergency services across the region are working tirelessly to assist communities who have been affected by the storm, and I pay tribute to their work. They cannot do this work alone; they need support. I welcome the government’s announcement that it will give GBP 50 million for flood victims, but the truth is the government previously cut GBP 115 million from the flood defences. Therefore, I urge the UK Government to make all the necessary efforts to help the emergency services and victims of the flood. I call on the British Prime Minister to apply for EU Solidarity Funds without any delay. My fellow Labour MEPs and I have written to the government urging them to do so. The people of Cumbria must get the help they deserve to rebuild their lives after the storm."@en1
