"Madam President, it is right that we focus on small business, which in my country is creating three times more jobs than big listed companies. But I want to back tonight paragraph 30 of the report, which regrets the lack of funding to social enterprises and calls for more help for social entrepreneurs. According to Social Enterprise East of England, over half of our social enterprises are less than five years old, and nearly one in seven export – precisely the businesses that this European facility should support. I am proud to have supported a commitment of GBP 96 million to voluntary and social sector enterprises in the structural investment funds in the last five years, in addition to 113 community grants in my constituency in the last year alone, but this should be business funding, too. I want us to find the new social entrepreneurs in the tradition of John Bird, founder of the Big Issue newspaper for homeless people who lives in Cambridgeshire, or Andy Bradley, the Essex social entrepreneur who is helping health providers rediscover compassion. Our vote tomorrow will help find them."@en1
