"This report, rightly, acknowledges that it is for Member States to determine their energy mix and that it is a sovereign decision of each Member State on how to decarbonise its economy. There is, however, a role for EU level coordination of policies and technological development, in order to deliver on Europe’s and Member States’ climate and energy targets. Ensuring a much higher level of interconnectivity between national power systems is essential for ensuring a more flexible, decentralised and sustainable energy sector, and facilitating an increase of renewable energy. My country, Scotland, is well placed to harness its abundance of resources in the form of wave, wind and tidal generating potential. A sensibly prioritised EU Energy Union will give due priority to supporting the provision of interconnectors, so that Scotland’s potential surplus electricity can be sold to the mainland European market, where guaranteeing long-term security of supply is necessary.
While I support the idea of an Energy Union in principle, there are some aspects of the report that we will vote on tomorrow that I cannot support. For instance there is, in my view, unacceptably strongly worded support for nuclear generation, and EU financing thereof. I cannot support that."@en1
